A hot cinder popped out of the crackling fire and landed on Superman’s face. He opened one eye and saw several pairs of feet leaving the area, plodding away from the fire, toward the mountain.

The fire.

Superman felt its warmth invite him to look into it. Racked with pain and overwhelmed by fatigue, he had barely enough strength to lift his head so that he might see the flames.

They were beautiful.

As Superman stared into the dancing fire, he started to remember a world he’d never known. It was a beautiful world filled with people who loved him. He looked deeper into the fire and saw his parents, Jor-El and Lara, who smiled at him.

A thought leaped to his mind: Don’t look! It’s a trick! But Kal-El didn’t have the energy to shut his eyes, let alone turn his head away. Besides, the story the fire told him was a good one, a story about what might have been . . . or maybe it was an actual memory, he could no longer tell.

The Man of Steel lay still, his eyes fixed on the fire, as it wove for him a lifetime of memories . . .
